When you think about the word ‘mirror’, naturally the thoughts of reflection come to mind. A Mirror Will will reflect the wishes of a particular Will.

A single Will is a Will for an individual. Single Wills are not designed to be used for couples who want to have similar clauses in their Wills.

Mirror Wills are designed for couples to make life easier. These are two separate Wills which would set out the same wishes for couples in their Wills, so a husband, wife or partner would make (almost) alike Wills, hence the term ‘mirror’ is used. One Will is to be signed by one spouse and the other Will by the other spouse. These two Wills essentially mirror what the other says.

Single, Mirror Will Vs Trust

A trust is a legal structure which can be included as part of your Will and can offer increased asset protection for your loved ones. These types of Wills are called trust Wills. We would always recommend that you consider the benefits of setting up a trust as part of your Will.

They are most commonly seen in the following circumstances:

  • you wish to protect your estate against possible care fees in the future.

  • you have a spouse or partner but children from a previous relationship.

  • you wish to leave some of your estate to a vulnerable or disabled person.

Trust Will

Estate planning isn't just sensible for your finances, but also for your peace of mind. It will help you feel at ease knowing that your financial affairs are taken care of in the event of your death. Plus, with a solid plan in place before you die, you can start passing on your wealth and reducing your inheritance tax (IHT) bill.

There are a lot of complex rules surrounding IHT. It can be difficult to understand how the thresholds work and how much tax your estate would be liable to pay.

And even if you've got your head around the rules, it can be tricky to work out how they might apply to you. But with careful planning and the help of an expert, you can start passing on your wealth before you die.

Estate Planning & Tax

Property and Financial Affairs allow you to choose a person(s) to take over the administration of financial affairs and continue to do so should you become ill or mentally incapable.

Health and Welfare allows you and your spouse or civil partner to choose the person(s) you want to deal with your health and welfare, such as your living arrangements, when you can no longer do so.

Please note the Office of the Public Guardian charges an additional £82 Court Registration Fee per person per document. You may qualify for an exemption or a reduced fee if you receive a means-tested benefit, Universal Credit, or your income is less than £12,000.

Lasting Power of Attorney

Estate Administration includes identifying the deceased’s estate, applying for the Grant of Probate, and distributing the estate to the beneficiaries. The value of the estate for pricing purposes is determined as all assets, less any liabilities as of the date of death (excluding any mortgages). The cost of administration is dependent upon the complexity of the estate and is always agreed upon with the Executor and, with the Executor’s permission, the beneficiaries before any administration work progresses.

DanJo & Co are always on standby to offer our clients a full estate administration service which is capped at a maximum of 2% of the value of an estate + VAT (except in exceptional circumstances) What is this?

After being appointed by the named Executor or Administrator, we can complete the entire estate administration. This allows the Executor or Administrator to relinquish all legal and financial responsibility, removing the stress and hassle off their shoulders.
